Edema is fluid that leaks out of the vascular system at the capillary level (small arteries and veins) or from the lymphatic system. This results in fluid accumulation in and under the skin. The increased volume of fluid causes the skin to stretch and become tight and shiny.
It can be a manifestation of chronic venous insufficiency, but there are many other causes as well. Therefore, if you are experiencing edema, it is important to schedule a full evaluation in our clinic. Dr. Johnson will do a comprehensive ultrasound assessment of your superficial and deep veins and order any additional testing required to determine the cause of your edema.
